Beauty Talk #1 : AHA & BHA (Chemical Exfoliants)

Monday, August 07, 2017

So sorry my blog got some problem at that time, so post ni ter'publish' dengan sendirinya 😓 padahal waktu tu mukadimah pun tak sudah lagi taip 😂

Okay back to the topic, AHA & BHA ni is a 'chemical exfoliants', tugas yang lebih kurang sama macam kita gunakan scrub,  tapi scrub merupakan 'manual exfoliant' yang mungkin akan menyebabkan micro tear, but if you're using these AHA & BHA, it will give out some chemical reaction. Before that, I think many of you sekarang masih menggunakan 'manual exfoliant' (apricot, lemon, green tea la apa semua tu) yang rata-rata dijual kat kedai, tapi kalau produk AHA/BHA ni dia mesti ada tulis kat packaging dia and AHA/BHA ni agak mahal berbanding scrub muka yang lain.

Alpha-Hydroxy Acids (AHA)
  • water soluble { preferred for normal to dry skin & sun damaged skin } 👤
  • great to rejuvenate aging skin 👵
  • improving moisture content
  • best use at night 🌝  a stable sunscreen is needed to be applied after using it in the day 🌞
Mostly AHA are commonly found in these forms :
– Glycolic acid: derived from sugar cane
– Lactic acid: derived from milk
– Mandelic acid: derived from bitter almonds
– Tartaric acid: derived from grapes
– Malic acid: derived from apples and pears
– Citric acid: derived from citrus fruits

Then, how you should use this product ? 🙌
Since AHA is product that is a water soluble, so they work best on your bare skin. You should at least at for 10 minutes after patting dry your skin before applying AHA product to gain the best result. If you are using an oil cleanser, make sure that you already wipe as much as possible the oil residue 😬 so, the step will gonna be like this
  1. cleanser
  2. pat dry your skin
  3. toner
  4. AHA product
  5. serum if you're using one *need to be use immediately after that AHA product*
  6. moisturiser
In case of that serum, not all serum you can use immediately after AHA/BHA product such as vitamin C serum, you should wait at least 20-30 minutes then you can continue your routine . And ! If you just started to use this product, you need to slowly add it into your skincare routine like once a week / two times a week then you may use it often even everyday as long as your skin are doing fine.

Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHA)
  • work to unglue dead skin cells { best for acne-prone / oily skin }
  • derived from salicin and being found in aspirin, *for those with aspirin allergies need to avoid this product*
  • oil soluble
  • can treat whiteheads and blackheads
BHA can be found in these forms :
– Salicylic acid: derived from the Willow Bark Tree and others.
**This acid is dominantly used in skin care**
– Citric acid: derived from citrus fruits and considered a cross over acid. It can be an AHA depending on its formulation.

The step on how you should add this BHA product into your skincare routine :
  1. cleanser
  2. toner
  3. AHA product
  4. serum if you're using one
  5. moisturiser
Just as same as AHA product, you need to be sure that your skin are okay and stable before using it often as you want. A sensitive skin should be more cautious because these AHA / BHA products are acidic and their pH value is between 4-5.

The Differences Between AHA & BHA Products
  • Both AHA and BHA diminish the look of lines and wrinkles.
  • Both AHA and BHA can make skin look and feel firmer.
  • Both AHA and BHA hydrate and increase skin’s smoothness.
  • Both AHA and BHA improve dull, uneven skin tone and rough texture.
  • AHAs are water soluble and are preferred for normal to dry, sun-damaged skin due to their ability to enhance natural moisturizing factors within skin.
  • BHA is oil soluble and preferred for normal to oily, clog-prone and bump-prone skin, and enlarged pores, and can clear pores deeply, even those with hard, tiny, white bumps on the cheeks and face. BHA is even suitable for those prone to milia.
  • AHAs and BHA work on skin’s surface; but BHA also works inside the pore lining, where clogs begin.
  • BHA has natural skin-calming properties, which make it preferred for sensitive, redness-prone skin. It's great for sensitive skin, even for those with rosacea.

If you're going to ask whether is it okay for you to use it both , the answer is YOU CAN but there's a condition, you need to alternate them like this
  • Apply one type of exfoliant in the morning and the other at night, both times after cleansing and toning.
  • Alternate days: Use an AHA once or twice daily on Monday, a BHA once or twice daily on Tuesday, and so on.
  • You do not need to wait for your toner to dry before applying your exfoliant, and you don’t have to wait to apply the next product in your routine after applying your AHA or BHA exfoliant {unless you're using a vitamin C base product, you need to wait at least 20-30 minutes}.
  • If you have combination skin, where the T-zone is oily and clog-prone with large pores, but the cheeks are dry, experiment by applying a BHA exfoliant to the oily areas and an AHA exfoliant to the dry areas.

That's all about AHA & BHA products that I can share with you guys, I've been reading and searching article about this for 2 days, and I hope you guys do learn something 💡 Adios 📍 Eh don't forget to ask if you got a problem regarding above
